Born in Flames x Hi Books

Born in Flames (1983) Directed by Lizzie Borden. 1hr 20min. Not Rated. Join us for a weekend of early independent Lizzie Borden films presented with Hi Books. First up, Born Into Flames—a postpunk feminist futurist provocation from the 1980s underground independent film scene.  “This unruly, unclassifiable film—perhaps the sole entry in the hybrid genre of radical-lesbian-feminist sci-fi vérité — premiered two years into the Reagan regime, but its fury proves as bracing today as it was back when this country began its inexorable shift to the right.” – The Village Voice Guest programming this weekend, Hi Books is a tiny bookshop/artspace and occasional editorial/curatorial project with a focus on contemporary photography and independent publications in the fields of art, fashion, design, youth culture, rave culture, counterculture, and queer history. “We’re a proudly feminist, artist-run, owner-operated space, dedicated to cultural diversity, building community, and providing opportunities for emerging artists, photographers, publishers, and curators.” We do not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films, and films exhibited don’t necessarily reflect the views of PAM CUT or the Portland Art Museum. In addition to the synopses, trailers, and other links on our website, further information about content and age-appropriateness for specific films can be found on sites like Common Sense Media, IMDb, and DoesTheDogDie.com.
