Moonlight

Moonlight (2016) Directed by Barry Jenkins. 1hr 51min. Rated R. Guest programmed by Black Art and Experiences (BAE), Moonlight (2016) is featured as part of our film series Pretty, Witty and Gay—in conversation with the David Hockney exhibition. Moonlight, the Academy Award–winning film directed by Barry Jenkins, is told across three chapters of a young man’s life, Moonlight offers a deeply intimate portrait of identity, tenderness, and self-discovery through luminous color, gesture, and atmosphere. Presented in conversation with the David Hockney exhibition, the film echoes Hockney’s exploration of looking, longing, and the emotional power of image-making. Together, the screening and exhibition invite audiences to consider how artists across mediums use color, light, and portraiture to reveal interior worlds and expand representations of love, vulnerability, and belonging. We do not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films, and films exhibited don’t necessarily reflect the views of PAM CUT or the Portland Art Museum.
